Eye Tissue Donations Remember that deciding to donate is a two-step process. First you make your decision; then you discuss your wishes with your family. Let your loved ones know that, even though you have signed your donor card, medical personnel will ask for their consent. Decide whether you are willing to donate all organs and tissues or only specific organs and tissues. Organs that can be donated are the heart, lungs, kidney, liver, and pancreas. Tissues that can be donated include eyes, skin, bone, veins, and heart valves. Be sensitive to any concerns your family may have about your decision to become a donor. Tell them why you have made this decision and why it's important to you that they carry out your request. Also, let them know that many donor families have said they were comforted by respecting their loved one's wish to save or improve other people's lives. Consider that your organs and tissues may not be suitable for transplant and may, instead, be used for research or teaching purposes. In North America, researchers have developed new surgeries and treatments by studying donated tissue. One person's organs and tissues used for transplantation can help up to 10 other people. One person's organs and tissues used for research can help thousands. Understand that organ and tissue donation gives the gift of life and the gift of sight to others. As such, it is consistent with the beliefs and attitudes of most cultures and ethical traditions. ________________________________________________
